About
About Rob,
I have for years been involved with people who are new to handguns. First, as a Senior Army Non-Commission Officer, where I was assigned to the California National Guard Office of the Adjutant General. The “JAG” or attorney’s office. Part of my duties there was to help young “90-Day Wonder” Second Lieutenant or First Lieutenant attorneys come up to speed in their handgun proficiency. As an enlisted soldier all of my training was with the M16 rifle and so I could see being out in war zone with one of these knuckleheads and knowing that neither of us were proficient with the Beretta M9 pistol. From that point I decided to become comfortable, proficient and competent with the Beretta M9 pistol. I became a range NCO and instructed officers and enlisted alike on the Beretta pistol, and ran a few ranges for annual qualification.
Later on, I worked 12 years at the Front Sight Firearm Training Institute. I was not an instructor but I took the teachings from the courses and provided training in my own home town area to new handgun owners.
For whatever the reason, people over the past 10-12 years have felt a need to have a handgun in the house. Previously, they may have had a handgun buried in the closet somewhere or never had a handgun in the house, but recently decided to buy their first gun. There was much a fear and trepidation over having a gun in the house and these people desperately wanted to be comfortable, confident, competent and proficient in having a handgun in the house.
I have my NRA Range Safety Officer designation and have continued to guide "newbies" on and off the range, and suggest to people what handguns may be right for them. Handgun suitability does differ from person to person according to their plans, expectations and comfort level.
